Utterli News: Adobe AIR Desktop Client Released Today

Good Morning Everyone!

Today we have a public beta release to share with everyone. Utterli for the desktop is available here. I want to thank the Utterli ambassadors, some our earliest and most savvy customers, for continuing to make themselves available. The RedBull-fueled dev team deserves huge kudos for this release as well as the recent eBay Giving Works effort.

And, when you have a chance, go check out the story at Mashable from our very own Utterli member, Paisano.

Here’s a look at Utterli Adobe AIR Desktop Client:

Flickr Cross Posting Connection Errors Resolved

We apologize to everyone in our community effected by this but, as a result of our re-brand efforts, those of with existing Flickr connections will need to reauthorize your Flickr cross posting connection.

To get your Flickr cross posting working again you’ll need you to follow these quick steps:
1. Log in to Utterli
2. Select ‘Apps & Widgets -> Cross Posting’
3. Select where it reads ‘Edit’ alongside your ‘Flickr’ connection
4. When taken to the next page, select REMOVE
5. Once you’ve removed your existing Flickr connection, simply set up a new connection

Again, we’re very sorry about this and will do our very best to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

eBay Giving Works on Utterli

Hey everyone,

This is Roman, just one of the many members of the broader Utterli community. I’m also a team member of eBay Giving Works, the charity listing program on eBay.

The team at Utterli let me take over their blog today to talk to you about how eBay Giving Works is using Utterli.

We plan to use Utterli to interact with our community in a fun and personable way. There are thousands of nonprofits and individuals (like you and me) who do a lot of good in the world. We want to hear your stories, we want to see the comments and we want to be linked to the good you do:) The eBay community has raised over 150 million dollars for nonprofits and we are celebrating our 5th birthday.

Our Utterli group page will be the place to hear and see all the things that are happening on eBay Giving Works, as well as on our blog. We will be posting everything from our pictures to our celebrity users of the program (go check out Tony Hawk on our page now).

Utterli lets anyone respond and create new messages for eBay Giving Works, from any PC or mobile phone. Utterli makes it so easy to respond and share.

Today you can go to the eBay Giving Works Group and check out some videos, some auction links and if you’re so inclined, join the group and share in the celebration.

I have to get back to my 2.0 activities, so I hope you check us out and join the eBay Giving Works Group to learn more about how you can support your favorite nonprofits.

Thanks,
Roman

Mobile Shortcut Quick Tips

utterli-image
We just received a question regarding auto-posting to a cross-posting endpoint and, since one member (http://www.utterli.com/…icswebpage) of our community had a question about this it means another might as well, thought we should take this opportunity to reiterate some of our mobile shortcuts and provide you with a link to where you can find these in their entirety:

delete@utterli.com - send a message to delete@utterli.com to delete your last utter. The body of the message will be ignored.

post@utterli.com - to post your last utter to one or more of your cross-posting sites, send the name(s) of the desired cross-posting sites in the body of the message to post@utterli.com.

private@utterli.com - send text, pictures, and/or video to create a private utter. To send to one or more contacts, use “@username” in the message body. The subject of this message will become the title of the utter.

tag@utterli.com - tag your last utter by sending space separated tags to tag@utterli.com. Multiple word tags should be in single or double quotes.

title@utterli.com - send the title for your last utter in the body of a message to title@utterli.com.

username@utterli.com - to send a private utter from your handset, use private@utterli.com and include “@username” for the intended recipients(s) in the message body, or send as a direct message to “username@utterli.com”

groupname@utterli.com - To send an utter to a group from your handset, include “@groupname” for the intended group(s) in the message body, or send as a direct message to “groupname@utterli.com”

Utterli working on minor issue with Yahoo! Mail

Hey everyone,
We recently started seeing delivery problems with “welcome” emails intended for new members registering with Yahoo! Mail addresses. We’ve been working to resolve this issue, and I apologize if you’ve been digging around for your welcome email notification. For your convenience, I’ve posted below:

Thanks for joining Utterli!

Utterli helps you create and follow discussions with friends or new people with similar interests. You can create or join a discussion from any mobile phone or computer. Utters are cool because they can be audio, video, pictures and text, and it’s really easy to post to your other online profile pages.

Creating a message is really easy. This is how you get started:

1. Call your local utterli number (712.432.6666 in the US) to record a new utter, listen and reply to other utters.

2. Send video, pictures and text to go@utterli.com for public messages or private@utterli.com for private messages. Sending within 10 minutes of recording will match up your video, picture or text with your recording.

To see other peoples utters, simply go to http://www.utterli.com from your PC or visit http://m.utterli.com from your mobile browser.

What does Utterli do that is different and better?

If you have online profiles at social networks or a blog, you can use Utterli to update those profiles with video, text, pics and audio. Utterli supports cross posting to the most popular sites, such as YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Blogger, WordPress, and many more. To start cross-posting, click here http://www.utterli.com/u/connections.

Have suggestions? We love them! Check out the feedback section http://www.utterli.com/feedback.

Welcome to Utterli and happy uttering!

New Utterli Mobile Posting Features and Groups Release

Today we rolled out two new features on the phone side:

  • Added the option to designate an utter sent to more than one contact as private

Here’s how it works:

  1. Record an utter
  2. Press option #5
  3. Address to one or more contacts
  4. Presented with the option to send as “Private”

Note: if a user hangs up before the selection, the utter is saved as “Public”

  • Added DTMF (Dual-tone multi-frequency) selection of contacts and groups fixes
  1. There were reports of problems when multiple results were returned – this has been fixed
  2. There were reports of delays in the interaction causing sluggish behavior – this has been fixed

Additionally, we implemented a change to Utterli Groups:

Now, when you’re viewing a group and a) reply to an existing utter or b) create a group utter, you’ll automatically join that group - if you later decide you no longer want to remain a group member, not a problem, you’re able to leave any of ‘Your Groups’ with a single click:

American Red Cross Social Media Roadblock

Hey everyone! Today is the American Red Cross Social Media awareness day. Join this group and listen to Claire Johnson’s request for your help in raising awareness. Change your avatars, create blog posts, post a group widget to your blog — join in the effort here: http://www.utterli.com/AmericanRedCrossDay

slow autoposting?

I’ve been experiencing some problems with the Utterli autoposting feature. Specifically, the posts are taking upwards of an hour to appear in Twitter and Typepad. Our engineering team has been examining my cross posts and confirming successful post publishing through web service calls to Twitter and Typepad. This looks very much like an issue we saw when Twitter was having “fail whale” problems earlier in the year. Respond and let us know if you’re seeing dupes or slowness in autopost/crosspost feature. And, of course you can contact us through feedback at any time. I just wanted to let everyone know taht we’re paying very close attention to this issue, and we’re trying to figure out if there is something that we can do better, maybe even find something that would help companies managing platforms where Utterli cross posts are delivered.

Group Discussions, and Utterz now Utterli

Hey everyone,
It’s been a busy summer for us. We were busy putting Utterz beta customer feedback into action. Our incredibly talented engineers were able to rapidly develop and release new features and functionality — faster than any development team I’ve worked with. An intense period of development started in the first week of June. Here is what we delivered over the summer:
• Our API, which is already being leveraged for a dozen projects, including partner product integrations into popular sites and services
• A user interface overhaul that eliminated confusing and crowded user preference menus
• Creating an utter is now much easier – both from the PC and the mobile phone
• We added features enabling easier sharing, connecting and communicating – things like direct messaging
• Video quality enhancements and better handling of letterbox formatted video

We’ve been quiet about these changes, but we are really appreciative of the supportive feedback from the Utterz beta customers — it kept us working through weekends all summer.

In the process of understanding how our customers value our service, we also learned that discussions need to be portable, participation needs to include mobile content creation and sharing, and our service needs to be present in all of the relevant social web ecosystems where people already have conversations. But we went further than examining these issues by re-examining our own customer usage, interviewing competitors’ customers and speaking at length with potential customers about their needs.

Starting today, you’ll see the two biggest R&D learnings reflected in our service. Those two learnings are:

1. There is a huge need for mobile group discussions. Overwhelmingly, social web users told us that conversations communities — dial-up, SMS, video, text, image-based — need to focus on enabling group discussions with mobile participation. Social web users were very critical of the current notions of groups — they told us that current group features in various social web services are inadequate, disconnected from the phone and poorly integrated with contacts, people search, and topical search. When asked, you told us the multi-modal interpersonal communications and content sharing functionality of Utterz inspired memorable conversations and fostered meaningful relationships. And, you asked us to bring more people into the conversation by turning a conversation into a group – a place where a topical discussion has a permanent home.

We took this to heart, as is reflected in the new tagline: Create, Connect, Share, Anywhere. More importantly, we have embarked on a process that we believe will redefine the common definition of Groups. We believe that a Group is not a “feature” for any social web or community site — rather, Groups are the best way to organize content and relationships. We encourage you to explore our version of Groups and give us feedback so that we stay on track throughout this critical growth phase.

2. Utterz has outgrown its original identity. The cow puns, mascot, etc., are loved by some of our earliest customers and employees. And, we’re forever grateful to those people for their enduring support and creativity. However, the Utterz identity was limited in scope and appeal, inhibited some new customer adoption and interfered with some key business discussions.

Today we unveil Utterli — a new name and a new identity that bridge our heritage with the rapid growth we’ve undergone in recent months and provide for the future business growth we can now begin to address. But, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the new name is that, with Utterli, an “utter” is still a post, and members can continue to use meaningful references to “utterers” and “utts.”

Finally, I’d like to share a word or two about our recent growth rates. The Utterli userbase has more than tripled in the last two months thanks to a combination of product improvements and high-profile use cases, such as the American Red Cross, Representative Culberson’s controversial use of Utterz in Congress, and user-driven sports team communities, band communities and political events. People utilizing our service are creative and attracting audiences, and, in a lot of cases, new users are bringing with them their own communities. In terms of traffic to our properties (uniques, views), Utterli leaped ahead of mobile social community sites such as Plurk, Pownce, and Tumblr and is quickly gaining on Twitter. For this growth, we’re thankful to everyone using Utterz – we’re humbled by your appreciation, and inspired by your criticisms. The growth is nothing short of phenomenal, and we look forward another escalation in adoption and usage after today’s addition of Groups and the launch of new partnerships with well known consumer services.

On that last point, over the next few weeks, Utterli will announce new product initiatives created through partnerships with device companies, media management services, vertical media destinations and mass market consumer web services. And, new services will be brought to market through our web services API, where partners and independent developers alike are tapping our powerful, underlying group communications platform to expose fun and compelling services focused on mobile publishing, group MMS and media sharing.

We encourage you to continue to communicate your needs, thoughts and insights during this intense period of growth — your ideas and inputs are invaluable and always appreciated.

Thanks for your time and commitment to Utterli!
